Mushroom extracts

What are mushroom extracts and why do they dominate?

Extractions are a popular way to get your dose of mushrooms, and they’re also one of the best ways. When it comes to consuming mushrooms, the top two choices are powdered extracts or double extractions. Extraction is the optimal method of consumption because it ensures that the ingredients in the product will be bioavailable. Considering bioavailability is the bread and butter of mushroom product markets. It should always be checked off your list before purchasing a mushroom product. Without considering bioavailability, you may not be getting the most bang for your buck. Remember that mushrooms are very starchy and sometimes a bit difficult to digest. And while you’ll still get a decent amount of fiber intake, a simple dried mushroom product won’t give you what you’re looking for in terms of bioavailable nutrients. As mushrooms grow in popularity for their purported health benefits, it’s becoming increasingly important to educate yourself on consumption methods so you can truly benefit from the magic of mushrooms.

How the extracts are made:

Extracts are made by extracting a part of a mushroom, such as the fruiting body or the mycelium. An extract can be made by dissolving the mushroom in menstruation (also known as a solvent). Common solvents are water or alcohol, but in the case of mushrooms it’s usually both! Mushroom extraction is the best way because it breaks down chitin – the polysaccharide that makes up the cell walls of fungi – and allows for increased bioavailability of beta-glucans! The solvent can be filtered, leaving behind a dry powder extract, or the plant matter can be filtered, creating a tincture!

Extracts in powder and tincture:

Powdered extracts are the result of a process that breaks down the mushroom to make it more bioavailable. It is important to make sure that the powder you are buying is indeed an extract. It is likely that you will find many mushroom powder products that are actually raw dried mushrooms that have not undergone any extraction process. The extracts increase the potency of the beneficial properties. when shopping, it’s important to know which part of the mushroom contains the most benefits. For some mushrooms, most of the powerful benefits are found within the mycelium, while for others their potency is found only in the fruiting body! Every mushroom is different, so be sure to do your research before purchasing a particular supplement.

Tinted extracts are the yin extracts to yang powder, so to speak. Both consumption methods are sustainable if done in the right conditions and using the right process.

Hot water extracts:

Dual extraction is the best way in most cases. Remember that a double extraction involves alcohol and water to extract both beta-glucans (water soluble) and triterpenes (alcohol soluble), so double extraction is often the best way to get the benefits of as many compounds as possible.

However, the alcohol extraction step can sometimes cause water-soluble compounds (β-glucans) to precipitate, thus leading to their filtering out of the final tincture. Since triterpenes and beta-glucans are usually sought after in mushroom products, double extractions involving alcohol and water are the way to go. But you may know that you’re looking for beta-glucans over triterpenes. Well, in that case it would be kind to avoid the alcohol extraction and just stick to a water extract!

Reishi, for example, is a mushroom best consumed after double extraction. That’s because reishi’s value comes equally from its beta-glucan and triterpene levels!* Reishi Calm Tincture at AdaptogenShrooms uses a double extraction for our reishi product to guarantee levels of both. When creating a tincture, we strive to give you the best possible product. That’s why our product uses 100% fruit body without mycelium in the grains and always comes with a certificate of analysis.
