How to cleanse body and mind daily*

Tips for cleansing the body, mind and spirit

Smoke clearance

A nice way to start or end the day is with a smoke cleanse — something that can be done in seconds. Take a carefully harvested herb such as cedarwood or sage, light it and make sweeping motions around the limbs and body. Use this practice to greet or close each day.*

Use a Neti Pot

With poor air quality and airborne pathogens plaguing our world, it’s important to clean the passage through which air travels into our bodies: the nose! Neti Kriya, or using a Neti Pot, is a yogic origin nasal irrigation technique for cleansing. This technique removes dirt and mucus. Using warm distilled water and non-iodized salt, pour the solution into one nostril, tilting your head forward and to the side, letting it drip out the opposite nostril. Once finished, tap each nostril to remove any excess.*

Try Oil Tralling

Oil pulling is an Ayurvedic technique meant to draw toxins from the mouth. Typically, a tablespoon of oil (coconut is common) is swirled around the mouth for 20 minutes. Many have noticed whiter teeth and a fresher mouth, as well as improved oral and general health.*

Practicing Nadi Shodhana

Also known as “alternate nostril breathing,” this yogic technique is used to revitalize the nervous and respiratory systems. Nadi Shodhana is usually practiced in the morning on an empty stomach for greater benefits. Using your right thumb to close the right nostril, take a full breath, then use your right ring finger to close the left nostril and take another full breath. Continue breathing through the right and left nostrils alternately.*

Stop eating late at night

When we eat late at night, we don’t give our bodies time to process and break down nutrients. Our liver works overtime to sort through the midnight meal when it should be resting while we sleep. This can cause sleep disturbances, weight gain and general digestive disturbances.*

Test Food intolerances

Bloating can be a sign of inflammation from foods that our bodies don’t tolerate well or can’t process. Try keeping a food diary or eliminating certain foods to see how your digestion changes depending on what you eat. You may be surprised by what causes digestive distress. While cutting out some of our favorite foods, such as wheat-based products, may not sound entirely appealing, the long-term benefits may outweigh the initial negatives!*

Eat carefully

Our culture is centered around fast food, quick service and eating as you go. It is important to take the time to prepare the food, smell the food and get the salivary glands to start the digestion process. Enjoying a meal that is organic, local and/or home cooked is not only good for the body but also for the soul. Slow down and offer gratitude for what you consume. Include leafy greens, fermented foods and fiber and reduce processed foods and sugar.*

Manage stress

Our brain and gut are connected, so when our body feels stressed, so does our digestion. Maybe you tighten up and can’t go, or it’s the other way around and you can’t seem to stop the flow. Take time to support yourself with mental health days, stress-relieving baths, or herbal adaptogens like Ashwagandha or almost any mushroom. These are known to promote the body’s adaptation to stressors.*
